Designing with Silverlight

Shape based silverlight program

Hi all, I am trying to learn silverlight (I can do bits and pieces in .net but I am by no means a programmer!) and I always find that the best way for me to learn is by doing small projects that aren't 2 difficult and I can follow the code. Therefore I
am wanting to do the following project and need some help getting started so wondered if anyone here would be good enough to get me going.
I want a program that you can basically pick which shape from a list of shapes that you want to use and then below it chose which colour you want that shape to be. I think the easist way would be to have 3 boxes on the page, 2 on the left (one above each
other) where you can select the shape and colour and then the box on the right where the chosen shape in the chosen colour will be. Im sure this wouldnt be hard to do and would be a good start for me 2 get into making simple silverlight apps so if there is
anyone that can help then I would be grateful.
Note - I am, as mentioned above, not the best at programming so I tend to use VB but any help would be greatly recieved. I also have blend studio 2 and visual studio 2008 SP1.
Many Thanks
Ok! I
made this lab for you.
It should give you a beginner's look at how certain things are done. Things for you to do are:
Add Borders around the Grids. Add Other Shapes. Make Shapes derive from common object, "Shape." Add Colors. Hook up Colors to Shapes
Hope that helps!
Hi! Draw out roughly what you want in Microsoft Paint, upload it to imageshack.us, and post the image here; it'll be more clear what you are trying to accomplish. Plus, it's always a great idea anyway -- to always plan everything out, because sometimes
you may discover that the application doesn't work or look the way you thought it would in your head.
Thanks for the advise, the image can be found at

Many thanks for that application!! Right I have gone through the code, and from your list the only thing I am having troubles with is adding different shapes, I have managed the borders and colours and managed to get them 'painting' accross to the main
shape. I will keep on working to see if i can sort it, cheers
Just an update to say I have now managed to add more shapes in, I am now going to see if i can add another canvas and have multiple selections of shapes at a time, cheers
Another update to say that I have another canvas in so I can select multiple shapes, cheers for your help with starting me off
Hey, no problem. Happy to help. :)
I have managed to get it working nearl the way I want. I am however trying now to load a shape within a shape (rusian doll kind of thing) but cannot see how to centralise each image. Due to their different shapes, one will load in the middle of another
but if i select a different shape then it overlaps. Is there any way to specify for the image to have its centre point bound to a specific point on the canvas? I think that this will then keep all the shapes within their master shapes. Thanks in advance
