How to turn off the HDMI USB powered 7" screen

Hi.
Having Raspberry Pi 3 and a 7" LCD screen that is connected via HDMI and taking USB power from Raspberry.
I am thinking about having a motion detector sending a signal to turn on the screen to show info about weather, next bus coming, and similar.
From what I have found so far, there is no way of turning on/off the screen programmatically from Win 10 IoT. I think I will need some sort of electronic switch or a relay sitting between the USB and the screen and connected to the Raspberry gpio to do it
programmatically.
Cold someone suggest what kind of switch or relay I need or if there is a better way of doing it.
Thanks!
Hello,
Have you checked about this post: turn off monitor
I think Paul DeCarlo Microsoft(MSFT) give the answer that you want:
"
Although this would not be nearly as elegant as software control through the
HDMI CEC, you may achieve a similar functionality with a relay switch attached to the power cable of your external monitor.
This would have the added benefit of reducing power draw in your system.
For example, you could use something like the Powerswitch
Tail 2 and control it through a single digital GPIO pin off of the RPi2

Thanks for your reply.
Powerswitch Tail is a bit of an overkill (size and price wise) when I am trying to control a 5V power with 5V from pins. It is a good tool if you are working with highr voltages. However something like "DC 5V 1-Channel Latching Relay Module" that
costs around 3 USD should work (an example,
one more).
I have actually
USB-HDMI CEC adapter somewhere and I will try it with Waveshare 7" LCD screen when it arrives but I don't count on the screen supporting CEC in this case.
I will update the post with the results when I am done.
Yes,
Maybe you will give us another new way to achieve this.Keep Fighting
Hi
Got the Waveshare 7" HDWI LCD (C) screen today. It works with Windows 10 IoT sort of plug and play but requires manually editing config.txt and adding the resolution there.
After i have set it up, I plugged it into PC and tested with CEC and the USB-HDMI CEC reported right away that the screen does NOT support CEC commands. So, this option is gone.
The good news is that the "Backlight "switch that sits on the back of the screen,
works pretty fast, and it takes milliseconds to turn the screen backlight on and off.
This topic shows how to turn it on and off programmatically using the relay. That is the way I will try doing it, when I will receive the relay.
I will post the results when I will be done with this task.
Yes, that works as I thought. A 5v 1 channel relay (from eBay) connected to the 2 pins like in the picture from the previous post, turns the screen on and off by setting Hight and Low on the In the case
of a "latching" relay, it is not possible to get the state from the relay, so it might be a better idea to get a non-latching one, depending on your use case.
it is a bit bulky because it is designed for use with high voltages but works perfectly with passing 5V to the screen. If anyone knows where to get a smaller relay for a good price, please let me know.
