USB power during OS update

Is it possible to turn on the USB power during the OS update?
I have Raspberry Pi 2 with USB powered HDMI display. During the OS update the display is turned off, so I can't see the progress with the gears. If I power the LCD screen from other source, then it is showing the progress. I don't want to power the display
always from external source, because I don't want to see the colored rectangle right after the powering. I want to see only OS related things on the display (not that colored square which is hardcoded in the firmware, if I understand correctly).
Also the Touch panel is connected through USB, so I definitively need the USB cable to be in the USB port.
i afraid its not possible but you can build your own usb cable to get the power for the panel from a different power source for example from one of the power supply pins from the general purpose i/o connector

OK, it is possible to create such a cable and turn the colored splash screen off by setting disable_splash=1 in config.txt of the Raspberry Pi. This way I can see the update progress and use the touch panel without the annoying rainbow square.
Thanks for help
